ValveのゲームがOriginでも買えるという記事を見て盛大に釣られたっていう話

Crysis 2がsteamから取り下げられ、BF3はsteamでのみ販売無しになるなど、EAとValveの関係はデジタル販売大戦争に見えていましたが、なんと、OriginにValveタイトルが登場しました。
このような事になった経緯をvg247.comは「両社はダウンロードサービスで”勝つ”方法はないと気付いた」（つまり、現在のsteamのような”一人勝ち”の状況はむずかしい）からと推測しています。
確かに、EAとValveという巨大な会社同志が争っても、どちらかが大勝というのは考えにくいですね。両社が提携するのは、ユーザと企業どちらも喜ばしいことです。

ていう記事をblogに書こうと思って、他のソースも眺めてたら、盛大に釣られたことに気付く。これ、実は、originでvalveのゲームがダウンロードできるんじゃなくて、リテール版を買えるってだけ。つまり、amazonから買うのと変わんないってことね。他にも釣られた人がいたみたい。

[Correction] As everyone points out, EA was the distributor of these games' retail versions. That's probably got a lot to do with it. And the fact these are physical copies, not digital downloads. I'm leaving the rest of this up so you can laugh, again, at what an idiot I am, but it's all non-operative.

Update: The Valve titles offered by Origin are, in fact, boxed retail copies, rather than downloadable versions as indicated. Seeing as EA has published Valve titles at retail for years, this is less world-shattering than originally thought.

Wait wait wait this is misleading. EA uses the same name for their Amazon-like online store that they do for their download service. You can technically buy Counter Strike from Origin here, but if you click on the “add to cart” link you’ll see that the only delivery option is “physical”, it’s sending a boxed copy to your house. I highly doubt that this is new, and you probably were able to buy the same games from the old EA Store, a result of the distribution agreement Valve has had with EA for some time (and still do have, they were the distributor for Portal 2). What you can’t do is buy these games from the Origin client the way you can every EA game.

I mean, Counter Strike is heavily integrated into Steam, so if you were able to download it through Origin I guess you’d have to then also download Steam, and then open it through Origin and then that opens Steam or something? Or Origin would just give you a Steam code, like it works with Steamworks games on other download services that don’t rely on clients, but that’s not what’s going on here. So yea, this isn’t news!
